The best method of tuning a guitar is to begin with the low E or thickest string, working your way down to the high E or thinnest string. After the low E is the A string that you want to work on.

This is also known as the fifth string. After the low E you tune the A, then D, G, B and finally the high E which is the string at the very bottom. This way you can then go back and tune the low E back a perfect fourth from the A and get a closer to perfect sound from your guitar.

Remember, in many cases the real reason that most new guitarists sound bad is because their guitars simply aren’t tuned properly. You should tune your guitar on a regular basis, and some even tune every time they pick up their guitar to play it. You will notice that on some occasions you hardly have to tune the strings at all and others it can be quite a lengthy process because the strings are far out of tune. The amount that strings detune themselves is really based on how frequently you’re playing the guitar so the more often you play the more often you will have to tune the guitar as well.
